In a profile in Sunday's New York Times Magazine, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee asked a reporter the question, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

Ah, Kolob .... the Osmonds' favorite planet and the inspiration for a couple of sweet albums:

hmmm they who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones...

I'll see your Jesus and raise you a Holy Ghost.

The Great Lord Xenu is not amused.

Are these assholes talking about me?

-- Jesus --

What's the answer? While you'r asking, ask what planet they get to rule when they die. There is no hell so they all go to heaven.

I posted this in Zat's thread.

How is it slander, does the church not call Jesus and Satan spirit brothers?
www.lds.org

We needed a Savior to pay for our sins and teach us how to return to our Heavenly Father. Our Father said, "Whom shall I send?" (Abraham 3:27). Two of our brothers offered to help. Our oldest brother, Jesus Christ, who was then called Jehovah, said, "Here am I, send me" (Abraham 3:27)

Satan, who was called Lucifer, also came, saying, "Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor" (Moses 4:1). Satan wanted to force us all to do his will. Under his plan, we would not be allowed to choose. He would take away the freedom of choice that our Father had given us. Satan wanted to have all the honor for our salvation

The first brother is Jesus, the second is clearly Satan.

After hearing both sons speak, Heavenly Father said, "I will send the first" (Abraham 3:27).

It states quite clearly that Heavenly Father heard both sons speak. That seems as clear as day that they believe they are sons of some sort, doesn't it?

And I hear talk of how this is used to defame Mormons, when it is clearly in their own scripture.

He missed the best one.

According to Mormon Theology, GOD had sex with Mary, who obviously was not a virgin.

Totally insane.

now, now, let's not let logic and reason creep into a discussion about religion.

"Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

Huckabee is a moron. Never heard of teh google, huck?

hmm... So God gave humans the ability to choose between right and wrong. Satan wanted to take that choice away. It looks to me like evangelicals (at least the politically active ones) are modeling themselves after Satan, not Jesus.

FF

"There is no hell so they all go to heaven."

The snipe is being ironic, sarcastic AND evangelistic here. I think! I cannot guarantee knowing how rightie "minds" work. That said and done, the second half of my Unitarian-Universalist denomination does believe in universal salvation, that EVERYone goes to "heaven."

And why not? If you simply cannot accept that this here-and-now is the only existence you'll ever experience, then why not invent yourself a religion in which you needn't sweat it? EVERYone goes ...

To the obvious next question, then why bother to be "good," there's an obvious response: It's just better to be good than to be bad. herm

"According to Mormon Theology, GOD had sex with Mary, who obviously was not a virgin. Totally insane."

Hey, nutty, if you're gonna invent yourself a religion, why not invent yourself a deity - in YOUR image - who gets horny like everyone else? herm

Google says that Mormons believe Jesus and Satan are spirit brothers Alexandrite, so does the LDS site.
www.lds.org

Bring'em Young also though people lived on the moon and the surface of the sun. He was a prophet right, was this what God was telling him?

en.wikipedia.org
We are called ignorant; so we are: but what of it? Are not all ignorant? I rather think so. Who can tell us of the inhabitants of this little planet that shines of an evening, called the moon? When we view its face we may see what is termed "the man in the moon," and what some philosophers declare are the shadows of mountains. But these sayings are very vague, and amount to nothing; and when you inquire about the inhabitants of that sphere you find that the most learned are as ignorant in regard to them as the most ignorant of their fellows. So it is with regard to the inhabitants of the sun. Do you think it is inhabited? I rather think it is.

To the obvious next question, then why bother to be "good," there's an obvious response:

You get to go to a higher level of heaven. There are different levels, you know.

BigJohn Huckabee, is that you posting again? Anything for a few more sheeple votes, eh?

"Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

YEAH!

Doesn't sound any crazier than believing you're invited to a naked brunch in the sky with Jesus!

BigJohn Huckabee, is that you posting again? Anything for a few more sheeple votes, eh?

Lol, you know I'm an atheist right?

So what part of the scripture that I pointed out above is incorrect Bart?

After hearing both sons speak, Heavenly Father said, "I will send the first" (Abraham 3:27)

Heavenly Father heard both sons, Jesus and Satan. Where did I get it wrong?

Curious Questions for Huckabee:

"What would your policy be toward the AIDS population in the United States if you were elected?"

"What educational standards would you push regarding evolution versus intelligent design and prayer in schools?"

"Why is the gold standard better than the current standard, in your opinion? Is there data to back up these claims?"

"What tax policies would you seek to influence Congress to implement if you were president?"

"What are your policies concerning universal healthcare? Do you believe the government should be involved in healthcare?"

Look, I asked a bunch of questions and they all had to do with politics in one form or another - not religion! Is that the only tool Huckabee has to attack others not of his faith?

Unfortunately for Huckabee, the responses to most of the questions above will make any answers given by the Mormons look mainstream. I echo Donnerboy's sentiments about glass houses and rocks...

....Huckabee and Romney are going to swift-boat each other......

spirit brothers

And that we're ALL spiritual brothers. Huckabee knows this(or should) and was attempting to play on peoples ignorance.

"Omg, they're BLOOD brothers!"

Xtian faith isn't much different. Satan was an angel ffs.

BigJohn, what you may not realize is that Mormons and many other religions believe that everyone was created by God - that's why He is called Heavenly Father. Because He is our Father, we are all His children. EVERYONE created by God is a spirit brother or sister. Jesus and Satan are brothers just as much as you, me and every other person are brothers and sisters - we were all created by God (the Father) and therefore are spiritually related. So, yes, on some level they are brothers but not on the same level as, say, me and my literal siblings.

Question: If you are an atheist, why are you always trying so hard to slam the Mormons? Why not everyone else too? After all, as an atheist, all other religions are just as wrong as Mormonsim.

"What tax policies would you seek to influence Congress to implement if you were president?"

I know he strongly supports the Fair Tax, a plus in my opinion. He just got Gilchrist's endorsement which kinda settles his immigration negatives. I don't know...I might be just starting to develop a preference. All I know for sure at this point is I AIN'T voting for Hillary.

Huckabee Gets Minuteman Head's Backing

Tuesday, December 11, 2007 2:30 PM

The founder of the Minuteman Project, the anti-illegal immigrant group, endorsed Republican Mike Huckabee on Tuesday, while Huckabee dismissed a presidential rival's immigration criticism as the work of "the tattletale in the third grade."

At a news conference hastily arranged to cope with a crippling ice storm, Huckabee brought out Minuteman head Jim Gilchrist, whose private group patrols the Mexican border on its own to keep out illegal immigrants.

"For months now, I've been searching for a candidate to support for president of the United States," said Gilchrist. He said he settled on Huckabee as the candidate whose plans were most likely to halt "this illegal immigrant invasion problem."

Huckabee has soared in the polls recently, jumping into the lead in Iowa where caucuses in less than a month launch the presidential nominating season. Rival Romney, who has spent millions in the state and for months was the leader, began running a TV ad Tuesday assailing Huckabee on immigration."

Good point, Alex - I wonder how many people realize that Satan's first name was Lucifer and that the translation for this is "Son of the Morning" (See Revelations, sorry, I don't know Chp and Verse...) I think Huckabee was trying to make Mormons (and Romney, obviously) look stupid but I think it'll end up biting him in the butt in the end.

I thought lucifer meant "light bringer".

If huckabee had a legitimate question about mormonism that he couldn't find the answer for the net...he could have called Romney privately.

This was just pure politics.

www.lds-mormon.com

I'm surprised this quote hasn't been brought up yet-

"he considers liberalism to be a cancer on Christianity."

Sounds like he won't be too divisive as president.

Alex, sorry, I was using the Christian translation from Isaiah (not Revelations as I previously posted) - Son of the Morning is another name, maybe not the literal translated name, but pretty close for Lucifer or Satan. But that's just semantics.

I agree about pure politics - my guess is that he's just trying to deflect the media from several of the more, ah, colorful statements and decisions he's made in the past.

"Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

As if whatever he believes is more credible. There is no proof of either "story." I love watching a believer in one fairy tale scoff at another. It's like a kid who believes in the Easter Bunny laughing at someone who believes in Santa.

Who really cares? I certainly don't. There are plenty of knuckle dragging "Orthodox Christians" that want to impose their repressive religious doctrines on the rest of us. One thing I don't want to see is another religious nut in the White House. I don't want a Neo-Socialist or a Neo-Communist in there, either.

Welcome to the DR, Vancouver Bob! You don't happen to have any friends by the same name from Buffalo, do you?

After all, as an atheist, all other religions are just as wrong as Mormonsim.

Posted by bartimus at 2007-12-12 03:40 PM

I do believe that all religions are false (in that all religions believe in the supernatural and God(s)) but Mormonism is patently false. Joseph Smith was a fraud and a con artist. I feel the same way towards Mormonism as I do towards Scientology, they are both quite similar.

Christians don't believe that Jesus is 'spirit' brothers with Lucifer. In fact Christians believe that Jesus is God, as part of the Trinity. So if Huck said 'spirit brother', would that have been better for you Bart?

The fact is that in your bible Heavenly Father listen to both sons, that notion is something that will be intolerable to most Christians.

www.lds-mormon.com

Posted by Alexandrite at 2007-12-12 03:48 PM

So why is Lucifer a far bigger problem to Mormons? Mormons claim that an ancient record (the Book of Mormon) was written beginning in about 600 BC, and the author in 600 BC supposedly copied Isaiah in Isaiah's original words. When Joseph Smith pretended to translate the supposed 'ancient record', he included the Lucifer verse in the Book of Mormon. Obviously he wasn't copying what Isaiah actually wrote. He was copying the King James Version of the Bible. Another book of LDS scripture, the Doctrine & Covenants, furthers this problem in 76:26 when it affirms the false Christian doctrine that "Lucifer" means Satan. This incorrect doctrine also spread into a third set of Mormon scriptures, the Pearl of Great Price, which describes a war in heaven based, in part, on Joseph Smith's incorrect interpretation of the word "Lucifer" which only appears in Isaiah.

Well you learn something new everyday I guess!

Mormons are NOT Christian!
I was raised in the mormon faith. In Ogden ,Utah.
I was taught that Jesus could only save me to the point of ressurection, after that I was on my own, meaning that only my own "works" could save me. NOT A CHRISTIAN TENET!

after that I was on my own, meaning that only my own "works" could save me. NOT A CHRISTIAN TENET!

Posted by yrman0191 at 2007-12-12 05:03 PM

But perhaps more logical. If Jesus can save me, why be good? If I have to stand on my own work...shudder.

Romney, Huckabee and the rest of those clowns are just using this Morman issue as a deflection away from the REAL problems in this nation that they don't want touch with a 10-foot pole.

DID YOU KNOW --

Romney's father -- George Romney -- ran in the presidential primaries in 1968 and his being a Morman was never brought up as an issue? So why is an issue being made now of his son being Morman?

I think it's all trumped up as an "issue" to deflect from having the public look at Romney's views (same as Bush's) on the really important issues.

AGAIN, the religious right sticks religion into the election and we have to listen to babble about Romney being a Morman (last election the religious right's gay marriage issue sucked all the air out of the election). Why are we hearing about religion instead of what Romney plans on doing about corporatism run amok, rampant out of control, unfair free trade, wide open borders with uncontrolled illegal immigration (THE main issue in Iowa, by the way), huge trade deficits and all the rest of our problems.

Personally,
I think if Joseph Smith and Saint Peter were still around, they would be teasing all of us for buying in to their April Fool's prank.

YRMan, maybe as a child you didn't understand the doctrine? Cuz what you wrote certainly ain't the beliefs of most Mormons. In fact, it ain't even the official belief of the Mormon Church.

www.mormon.org

Please note that it is through grace that enables Mormons (and other Christians!) to live with God again. Mormons beleive that Christ is the ONLY way to be saved. "It is by grace we are saved, after all we can do..."

Do you just sit on your butt now that you have accepted Christ or do you still try to do good works? Why, if you're already saved? Because your faith, without works, is dead, being alone.

CChris, good point. I think it's because Romney is actually a threat to other candidates and his religion is a place they think they can stick it to him. If you look at most of the posts, almost no one comments on how tough Romney wants to be on immigration, for example. It's all people just wanting to say "Mormons baaaaad".

Do I support Romney? I don't know. But if I do decide either for him or against him, it'll be for his policies and record, not for his religion.

I was only trying to tell everyone to love each other, that's all. Where'd all this other crap come from? Hmmmm

--Jesus--

What question did he ask the curious Mormon?

JOMAMA: FF!

This kind of attack--under the radar--asking a question--makes Huckabee appear bigoted.

It might play for some folks in the Repub party--just like it plays for some folks here on the DR--

But by and large Repubs--moderates and many conservatives do not appreciate attacks on other people's faith. It's a turn off.

I am not quite sure what it is about Huckabee--but he doesn't seem all that conservative. He may have the social issues --and he has made remarks way back in the distant past that make me kringe..some of his comments are way to the right--even for Baptists!

He apologized to Mitt for this comment--but the MSM is not letting any of this go.--so expect to hear more and more of it.

We need to hear about issues and what these guys plan to do for the country. What is thier vision?

Frankly I am tired of hearing about religion and what Mormons think and what Christians think--

Let's talk about what Americans think!

Murphy

They can use their car salesman, smile in your face, stab you in the back, slippery, flattering for the sake of gaining an advantage, word torturing, fartin' thru silk, brigham young PR tactics as much as they want - but the record is clear for anyone to see with their own eyes. Mitt opened the kimono on this one so let's finally hear what they REALLY believe.

Mormon theologian Bruce McConkie states, "The appointment of Jesus to be the Savior of the worlds was contested by one of the other sons of God. He was called Lucifer, son of the morning. Haughty, ambitious, and covetous of power and glory, this spirit-brother of Jesus desperately tried to become the savior of mankind."{11}
-McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, 546-547

Tell the truth, forget appearances, my mormon friends. You might be surprised that people will like you anyway. There's so much good in your culture - self sufficiency, a high regard for the elderly, strong families, respect for authority to name just a few.

Why all the lying - what are you ashamed of? Repent - God forgives you.

But perhaps more logical. If Jesus can save me, why be good? If I have to stand on my own work...shudder.

I can't remember the name of it , but there was a 18th or 19th century Xian sect that believed your soul's fate was decided before you were born. You could sin like crazy and get into Heaven, or you could lead a pious life and still go to hell. Everybody was supposed to act good and keep their fingers crossed.

Northguy-
They call themselves Presbyterians, among other names. Several centuries ago in Sundy-school I leaerned their odd doctrines...

These groups are the intellectual children of the 16th century theologian, John Calvin. Some, but not all, Calvinists believe in double predestination; i.e., God created some persons to go to heaven and others for the express purpose of damning them for eternity -- because it pleased him to do so.

Bartimus, let me assure you I understand the indocrination, oh my bad, doctine of the mormons.
And that I am most assuredly still Christian.
Still trying to be good, do good and all that.
I just got a problem with "Oh, By the way, Jesus forgot to tell you all this, and Moses left out that." Good stories, but stories still the same.

What he should have ask was, if the aliens show up in their DC10s to fly all of his people to another planet, would he stay until the end of his term.

Oh wait, that's the Scientologist. I get my cults confused.

The gyst I am getting is that Mormons now like to believe that Jesus and Satan are 'spirit' brothers, just like me and bart are 'spirit' brothers, so not 'real' brothers.

That seems to me to be disingenuous hair splitting. God listened to his sons (but not real sons) speak.

After hearing both sons speak, Heavenly Father said, "I will send the first" (Abraham 3:27).
