Frank Rich: Mr. Huckabee may well be doomed in the long term. He has little money or organization. He's so ignorant of foreign affairs that he hadn't heard of the National Intelligence Estimate on Iran a day after its release. His sometimes wacky economic populism riles his party's most important constituency, Wall Street. And who knows how many other Arkansas scandals will be disinterred along with the paroled serial rapist who popped out last week? That Mr. Huckabee has gotten as far as he has shows just how in sync his benign style is with the cultural moment.

Huck has something to compare him to the big O?

Yikes. I hadn't realized how far down real journalism had fallen.

Rogers: you got out with your integrity intact just in time.

Regards,
etc.

Frank Rich liking Huckabee is the kiss of death for him.

That would be like Ann Coulter supporting Obama.

Wow, the Republicans really are desperate if Huckabee is their Obama. Wouldn't that make

Paul their Kucinich (right but crazy and unelectable)

Thompson their Biden (sounds good at first, but, you know, not really)

Romney their Hillary (good enough, but facing some serious electoral pushback on religion/gender, etc.)

Guiliani their, well, there really is no analogy for Guiliani since Ted Kennedy isn't running.

Republicans are now experiencing the Democratic primary experience. Their powerbrokers haven't chosen their candidate for them this time, so they're stuck trying to pick one of a group, who will point out each other's faults so much during the primaries that they'll appear as mediocrities by the time the general election comes around. The real question is: who is their Dukakis?

Remember these words:

Lynard Skynard will be Huckabee's Oprah

The Dems have the advantage that Hillary and Obama draw support from some different demographics and teaming up would be a plus, no matter who heads the ticket. Huckabee seems like a nice guy, sort of centrist, but he doesn't match up well with any of the other Reps (like pro-abortion and pro-gay RudiG?) other than Mitt and two religious fundamentalists running for control is a bad idea anywhere but Tehran.

And we know those guys suck.

Mr Bowa (the Moderate):
Rich was saying those two have a play book other than fear and smear.

-The fact to remember about Mr. Huckabee's polling spike is that it occurred just after the G.O.P. YouTube debate on CNN, where Mr. Romney and Rudy Giuliani vied to spray the most spittle at illegal immigrants.

With Hucky, the Repubs get the Cutlure War against Godless Librals back as issues, something they didn't have with social moderates like Rudy and Mitt, who decided to kick the Mexicans around instead, as that was the easiest thing to do in this fear-pumped society.

Hay, I guess if I had to vote for a socialist I would vote for Obama.

Concern about immigration being the number 1 issue is polling at about 10%, a third of concern about Iraq or healthcare.

The GOPper righties have picked a great issue to obsess on. RudiG and Flipper need to start throwing punches over it-McCain't and Huckleberry would skyrocket mighty quickly, until they faced a Democrat.

Yo !

Aside from their time honored Fear n Smear Illegals is about all they have.

And interesting to see how they finesse that given that Bush and leading Repub senators advocated "shamnesty" (as the right so lovingly refers to it).

Hay, I guess if I had to vote for a socialist I would vote for Obama.

You don't actually know what a socialist is, do you?

It's OK, grown-ups use big words sometimes. I'm sure they'll explain it when you start middle school.

I only wish there was one single decent, electable individual, of any party, to vote for.

I suppose the liberatarians were right all along, 'no person that derserves to be elected will ever be elected'.

"Lynard Skynard will be Huckabee's Oprah"

No, Chuck Norris is Huckabee's Oprah.

Hay, I guess if I had to vote for a socialist I would vote for Obama.

Hay, why wait when you can squander it on the jingoistic corporate slave the GOPiggies will be putting up?

Wonder what Chuck Norris thinks of Huckleberry now:

Gov. Huckabee probably never read the confession of a demented killer named Glen Green before he made the monster eligible for parole.
___ Green's confession is so depraved, its sadistic details so scary that no sane, responsible adult would consider him for parole.
___ If the governor didn't read the confession, he is guilty of dereliction of duty.
___ But if he read the confession and still considers Green deserving of parole, he's certainly unfit to hold office. Who would free a madman who beat an 18-year-old woman with Chinese martial-arts sticks, raped her as she barely clung to life, ran over her with his car, then dumped her in the bayou, her hand reaching up, as if begging for mercy?
___ We're publishing the gruesome picture of Green's victim on the front page because we believe her hand is reaching up to demand justice.
___ In usual fashion, Huckabee's office didn't even contact the victim's family about the clemency.
___ Although he's required to by the Constitution, the governor, as is his custom, won't say why he granted clemency to this crazed killer (over the unanimous objections of the Post-Prison Transfer Board).
___ Huckabee apparently listened to Green's minister (and a friend of the governor), who thinks the murder was an accident and Green was forced to confess.
___ The Jacksonville police, who arrested Green in 1974 after a witness linked him to the crime, think the minister and Huckabee are both delusional, which is the mildest epitaph we can print.
___ This old police reporter knows a genuine confession when he sees one, and Green's depravity has the ring of truth.
___ Green, a 22-year-old sergeant, kidnapped Helen Lynette Spencer on Little Rock Air Force Base, where he beat and kicked her as he tried to rape her in a secluded area. She broke loose and ran toward the barracks' parking lot, where he caught up with her and beat her with a pair of nunchucks.
___ He then stuffed her into the trunk of his car and left her there while he cleaned up. Several hours later, he drove down Graham Road, past Loop Road and stopped near a bridge in Lonoke County. Green told investigators he put her body in the front seat and raped her because her body was still warm.
___ He dragged Spencer out of his vehicle and put her in front of the car and ran over her several times, going back and forth. He then collected himself long enough to dump her body in Twin Prairie Bayou.

ITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- As governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee had a hand in twice as many pardons and commutations as his three predecessors combined.

The case he's asked about most concerns the parole of a castrated rapist who later killed a woman.

Although the Republican presidential contender and Southern Baptist preacher plays down any personal involvement in that release, Huckabee granted 1,033 pardons and commutations in his 10 1/2 years as governor of Arkansas. The acts of clemency benefited the stepson of a staff member, murderers who worked at the governor's mansion, a rock star and inmates who received good words from their pastors.

''It seems to be true at least anecdotally that if a minister is involved, (Huckabee) seems likely to grant clemency,'' prosecutor Robert Herzfeld said in 2004 after successfully battling the then-governor over the release of a killer.

Concern about immigration being the number 1 issue is polling at about 10%, a third of concern about Iraq or healthcare.

It ain't immigration!!! It is illegals!!! Our government has a duty to protect our borders but has no right to provide healthcare. Lets keep our constitution in hand while we argue about issues.

Good Ideal Sniper, unfortunately, that old document is very inconvenient to todays method of politics. Don't believe it, test it. Send me a card from your jail cell.

You are right the democrats are more appropriatly called Collectivists. They don't really want state control of private industry, but they do want to redistribute the wealth of some for the benifit of others. They want to make the rich poor and keep the poor poor. Sounds awesome.

ARGH, do you have original thoughts or do you justregurgitate the same verbal diarrhea over and over again

YEAH!

Remember how under Czar Clinton, we had to give everything away?

Remember how companies were closing at alarming rates and we had to give up control to the govt?

Remember how taxes skyrocketed to 99%?

I sure do remember how many billionaires and millionaires weren't made in the 90's. If only they didn't have to give it all away to the poor.

Remember how crime spiraled out of control compared to todays numbers due to all the poor?

Remember how many poor people there were compared to now?

NO? Neither can anyone else.

Get a new line. Your 'commie' bullshit is tired and trite, but it is a nice scare tactic for the rednecks and hillbillies on here as it takes no thought to comprehend.

Common,

What in the hell are you doing - starting your post with "Yeah!"

I am conditioned to skip over posts that start with 'Yeah!"

I barely caught that you authored that post as opposed to Redneck.

Please don't ever do that again - I usually read your posts.

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Nag Nag Nag Nag Nag zippity doo da day. bitch bitch bitch yadda Yadda Yadda Yadda Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah.

Czar Clinton,

ha ha ha that is funny calling Clinton a Czar. Give me a break. Just because King Georgie turned out to be a dud. Stop projecting your parties problems onto the Dem's

"Lets keep our constitution in hand"

Said George Bush as he went to take a dump. Sorry Sniper: 10% is 10%. 1/3 as many as are concerned about healthcare or the war.
As for the government's Constitutional right to provide healthcare-show me the Social Security Amendment. Or the freeway amendment. They seem to have come about with a little non-linear thinking.

Common,

You are correct from 1994-2000 We experienced one of the greatest economic booms in our country's history. For the most part Willie did a good job of keeping government out of the way. Everyone was happy... then the dot com bubble burst, we had a few corporate scandles, and all of the sudden there are calls for regulation and congressional pannels, yada yada yada.

After the fall of the USSR, before the EU, and before the rise of China we had no competitors in the whole world. Clinton cut the DOD budget significantly, reduced the size of the Active duty force. It was very short sighted, our troops are paying for this now. When Rummy said "you fight with the Army you have not the army you want" he was speaking of the 1990's decision to balance the budget at the expense of national defense.

There were a few terrorist attacks on American interests and we did a little selective world policing. Bosnia = good, Rawanda = eh who cares. What ever, there is no oil in either place, so why bother anyway. All in all not a whole lot interesting going on in the world.

We should really be giving Bill Gates the credit for the mid to late 90's boom. Windows95 put the power of the person computer in the hands of any idiot who could use a mouse. Remember the good ol' days of DOS prompts and internet access via bulletin boards. Windows 3.1 was there but not commonly used. Windows95 changed the way America used computers.
