Silena Davis had counted on an early tax refund to pay for getting her teeth fixed. Now, because Congress has dawdled all year on a tax bill, she and millions of other early filers could have to wait extra weeks for refunds that last year averaged $2,291.

Why do so many people let the government keep their money all year, and $2300 worth!? C'mon people, the gov ain't payin' you any interest!

vote ron paul

It has nothing to do with the war. Has to do with the ineffective congress. How ironic that these people complain about the Iraqi gov not making progress and they cannot pass much of anything. They just need to shut up and get to business.

We have to borrow more money from China first. Damn Repugs, quit blocking the will of the American people and join with the Dems and pass bills.

But the Democrats have the majority in the house and Senate and can craft the tax bills. Have they put anything forward yet? Nope! It is not the Republicans holding up or blocking anything. So everyone who did not do the proper withholding during the year and have a refund coming have only the lazy Democrats to blame for their lack of a refund.

Lazy Democrats.
The Repugs only worked three days a week, before the Dems took over.
Before that they were working on important issues like flag burning.
The Repugs have have blocked too many bills for me to list. Maybe the Dems were focused on health care and the war.

Whats

As one of those people let me go ahead and put it in perspective. With 2k a year to save the interest you get from the bank is negligible. Figgure at best 2% so 40 bucks if you were able to put all of it in at the begining of the year. since you can't more like 20 bucks. Most of us are not in a position to save as our expenses run every penny you have so letting the IRS over withold is an efective way of saving up money. The loss of the 20 is not so bad when compared with an enforced savings plan that allows major purchases. (My house, paying off my car a year early etc.)

Sure it would be better to save through the year and make the extra 20 but I have to be realistic and remember that the 40 extra a week would be all to easy to spend on a luxury here or there.

Now as far as the gov keeping my money an extra week or two, most years would not be a big deal however this year with my medical expenses having drianed reserves and left me in debt a delay will hurt but not to crisis level.

Furthermore, any tax bill the Dems try to pass will be either blocked by the Repugs, or vetoed by Chimpy. So, if a tax bill is holding up refunds, it may be a long wait.

Lazy Democrats.

Actually, your ignorance is amusing. The Democrats haven't even yet brought the budget items to the floor. So, as usual, a liberal democrat like yourself is pretending to be a victim, while swallowing lies promulgated by what passes for your Democratic leadership.
Party on, dude. And we'll await your next missive, as soon as the fax comes from the DNC.

"So everyone who did not do the proper withholding during the year and have a refund coming have only the lazy Democrats to blame for their lack of a refund."

I consider any "refund" as an interest-free loan to the federal government.

I consider owing a token amount each April 15th as a success. That token amount was an interest-free loan from the federal government.

Hans

True enough Hans. Up to me, I wouldn't have money withheld at all--I'd rather just write a big check every April 15th. But, alas, no can do.

Well, I remember how the cynical the libs were, as they complianed as the Republicans sent out refund checks in advance to get the economy moving, and to illustrate their commitment to lower taxes. Now, we see that, in this one respect at least, liberals are the exact opposite.

See? Just when you thought there wasn't much of a difference between the parties once they got to Washington.

The root of the problem is what is known as pay as you go, or paygo, a budget rule revived by the new majority that says Congress must offset new costs with tax increases or spending cuts. The rule's purpose is to prevent new entitlement spending and tax cuts from increasing the budget deficit.

Thus far, it has complicated efforts to pass tax breaks for renewable energy, slowed progress on a farm bill and become a sticking point with the Bush administration over an effort to expand children's health insurance. It's a big reason Congress has made slow progress on some of its top priorities.

The rule is going to cause even bigger fights as Democrats scramble to finish important bills. One bill would prevent millions of additional people from being required to pay the alternative-minimum tax, or AMT, this year, and it would extend dozens of expiring tax provisions; another would increase Medicare payments to physicians. Under the pay-as-you-go rule, Congress will have to find more than $70 billion to pay for those items alone.

There are many reasons behind Congress's troubles, including vetoes from President Bush, a razor-thin margin of majority in the Senate and the bitter politics of the Iraq war, but paygo underpins many of the struggles. It requires lawmakers to vote for tax increases or spending cuts that hit powerful industries and campaign contributors, and it introduces a tangle of considerations to already-complex bills.

"We are hemmed in by reality, and that reality is paygo," said Rep. Richard Neal, a Massachusetts Democrat whose attempt to engineer a permanent repeal of the AMT was derailed in part by the rule.

Now Democrats are faced with an unpalatable choice: Either abandon paygo and undercut their message of fiscal responsibility, or endeavor to push difficult legislation through both chambers when the risk of failure is high.

Tao,

Without trying to insult you, I do understand that some people do not have the self control to save money on their own. You'd still be better off if you could find a way to direct deposit it to an account that was difficult to touch for some period of time. A buck's a buck.

I used to do the same thing. Several years ago I went in to business for myself, and cash-flow became everything. I now agree with RisR. I'd rather write them a check, for the whole bill if I could. I can buy and sell that $2000 to a lot more money by the end of the year.

In this situation the government's giving you nothing. Maybe Right-is-Right, Danforth, or Taxman would have some better ideas...rather than using tax withholdings as your savings plan.

What's it's not really a lack of self control it's a lack of money.

Many on here know this but I am poor as dirt, I don't blame anyone for this but it is my reality. I also do not accept any government assistance despite qualifing for quite a bit of it. Heck with MS i could probably sit on my ass and not work and collect SSD and SSI (yeah it would take two years to get approved but thats another issue) See when I say spend it on luxuries I include such expenditures as new work clothes for me, tools for my contracting work coats for the kids so they don't have to wear things 2 sizes to small through the winter. Like I said I don't complain about it, my situation is the result of a bit of bad luck and a bit of poor planing working hand in hand. I am trying to fix that with my contracting work I have hopes to get it going full time as a buisness and I have made good progress on that front. However an extra 40 bucks a week would surely be spent the bank really does not offer much for a guy who wants to use a small weekly savings and basicly spend it once a year. Like I said that includes buying a house and paying off a too expensive car payment over the past few years. Each of these moves long term puts me in a much better place. Unfortunatly the MS has basicly fucked me finacialy since it has required an extra 4500 cash layout in the past six months and another 1000 before I hit my deductible.

The bottom line is that alot of people share my income bracket and for whatever reason it works out well for us to pay the IRS 40 bucks to hold our money.

The Repugs have have blocked too many bills for me to list. Maybe the Dems were focused on health care and the war.

1. OK if there are so many, list 10 (but not related to earmark spending or renaming a post office).

Just 10? Can you?

2. If the Democrats were focused on health care and war, just what did they put forward? (aside from the idiotic SCHIP expansion for the rich) But you may include continuing funding for the Iraq war.

There now. You got anything left?

quit whining!

figure your taxes to where you barely owe them or they you a cent at the end of the year.

jeeeeeeez, when are people going to smarten up?

GIVE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO THE CHARITY(IES) OF YOUR CHOICE!

you know where your money's going and how it's spent - use charity navigator as your compass.

There now. You got anything left?

I've got something. Regardless of WHAT the dems are doing now, the repubs also had several years to fix the ATM. The ATM still isn't fixed. Maybe neither side really wants to fix it.

Would Vern like to concede that both sides have a problem, or would he like to continue to only shit on the dems?

US Senate:

Republicans: 49
Democrats: 49
Independent: 2

You're right! That's quite the majority, I can't imagine why they can't get anything done.

Simple, I have for decades had the minimum withheld so that each spring I need to send a check with my tax return. To let them earn interest on my money would be just plain stupid.

Why are people arguing about Democrats vs republicans, when both sides are fucking you in the ass?

I can empathize with you Tao and I know where you are coming from, but you should remember that Social Security is insurance and not welfare.

When you had it deducted from your paychecks in the past, you were paying your premiums.

You deserve to collect if you genuinely qualify for benefits.

This is too funny. Why not just give it to your Mommy to hold for you? Surely she's more reliable than congress.

"Why do so many people let the government keep their money all year, and $2300 worth!? C'mon people, the gov ain't payin' you any interest!"

Totally agree, I always tend to owe a little in April. I love how most of my friends and coworkers see their tax returns as some sort of "Spring Bonus" or something.

Uhhhh.. it was your money all along!

Also to the people saying you can't save....

Then put the money in an IRA or 401k pre-tax (or after, if that's your strategy). You'll never even know it's gone, and it loweres your tax liability.

"Why are people arguing about Democrats vs republicans, when both sides are fucking you in the ass?"

Because they are stupid. They will live their whole lives rooting for their "team" and denouncing the other. When the other "team" is in office, they will complain about how terrible the world is. When their "team" is in office they will make excuses for them, and the other side will complain about how terrible the world is. Meanwhile, nothing changes, and America is driven into the ground. The end.

If Rush Limbaugh didn't invent this, he sure perfected it.

Excellent point, Joe.

If Rush Limbaugh didn't invent this, he sure perfected it.

He certainly didn't invent it, however he definitely belongs in the Hall of Fame for this.

Hall of Fame or Hall of Shame Jeffy?

When you endorse blatant partisanship and propaganda to the detriment of facts and truth, you have forfeited the high ground.

But then you've never been more than a few meters above sea level anyway.

Oz,

I could be wrong, but it seems Jeff was nominating him for the Hall of Shame. Or, more precisely, the Shame Hall of Fame.

Kris,

I assume that you have never been poor, I'm talking beans and rice for dinner poor if so you would realize that in that circumstance it is virtual imposible to save. I hope you never have to learn that lesson and can continue to live your life as a condescending ass wipe.

If you do ever find yourself dirt poor let me know I will be glad to provide a few tips on how to survive.

IMO, large tax refunds seen as some sort of "ghetto bonus" only perpetuate to cycle being poor. It's not building any sort of lasting wealth.

Oz just reinforced Joe's comment.

Or Patriotic...Or in support of america...In support of Iraq above and beyond the requirement.

If we can give them our lives, surely a little interest free loan is the least we could do.

"Heck with MS i could probably sit on my ass and not work and collect SSD and SSI"

I respect you work ethic but actually I don't begrudge someone in your shoes the little bit of help that the government can and should provide. It's your money, ask for it. I grew up sort of poor and was pretty poor when my kids were young so I know how hard it can be though I can't say I had to contend with MS too. I hope things get better for you, sounds as if you're on the right track.

And remember, that's before taxes as the $40 (or $20) would be subject to both state and federal taxes anyway.

OCU

If Uncle Sam owes me money I file as soon as I get my W2 and any 1099's that I need. If I owe the feds/state money, I wait until 14 April. I figure that over the years we've sort of balanced each other out in terms of who got to use whose money 'for free' ;-)

Good point, except I wouldn't use the word "stupid". They are just stuck in the system as it exists. Keep in mind, they are mostly lawyers, and the law is designed exactly the same way; an adversarial system dedicated to winning instead of discovering truth or accomplishing something.

We need to keep pumping all the money to iraq.

And one very large portion of our discretionary spending.

I disagree. In fact, I'm on the other end of the spectrum: I've always felt it was my civic duty to pay as little legal tax as possible. We'd all do better if we held their feet more to the fire.
