What's so humanitarian about allowing people to come into this country illegally, get jobs, committ crimes, use tax-payer funded services while thousands of other law-abiding immigrants wait on line to emigrate here.

According to the article, they only surveyed 1,317 of the 10,300,000 illegal immigrants in the US. That comes out to a sample size of .01%. Hardly reliable.

But frankly, I don't really know what this study was out to prove. One of their conclusions was that illegal immigrants "tend not to have a regular doctor." Whose fault is that? Mine?

I think the rest of their results are aimed at the strawman that people supposedly argue that illegals use more healthcare than everyone else. I think peoples' real problem is that illegals are using any free healthcare services at all, not that they are using more. Not visiting an emergency room any more than the average American citizen still means that many of them are visiting the emergency room - just like we do.

Onna, we don't always ignore the employers. Recent guidelines allow state and local agencies to team up with the feds to go after companies that hire illegal aliens. This year over 25,000 illegals have been deported after being picked up from their employers. And I believe these employers face a stiff penalty for employing illegals. Because the program is relatively new, not many businesses have been fined, but hopefully it'll pick up.

Also, some towns like Hazleton, PA (amongst others) wanted to enforce the law even more by REALLY penalizing employers ($1000 a day per violation!) but anti-American organizations like PRLDE and La Raza have joined with activist judges to strike many of these proactive laws down. Hopefully either the Supremes can declare the laws targeting employers constitutional or the Feds can get their act together and pass some realistic border control and illegal immigrant measures.

Do your hospitals not require a screening before the illegals see a Dr.? I know in my town (in TX) the ERs all have a nurse check you and if the "emergency" is not life threatening, you have to show proof of insurance or pay in advance. This has cut down a bit on the improper use of ERs by the illegals where I'm at.

This article is nothing more than an attempt to soften the animosity towards illegal immigrants. Somehow, we are supposed to feel sorry for them when they receive inferior health care after entering this country illegally. Spare me.

I would have guessed that what people really care about is whether or not they're paying for the services they're receiving, and that information isn't in the article. The article also gives no indication of how many were paying taxes, had health insurance, etc.

I can see CChris' reaction from here (it's not pretty! *grin*), but in my area raids on factories provoke a lot of features about illegals who have been in the country for years, had regular jobs, paid taxes, had children who excelled in school, etc. etc., and whose entire families were facing deportation. It's important to know how many fit that profile, as opposed to the criminal, service-sucking profile others have in mind.

I have no problem with illegals receiving the health care they need to prevent themselves from dying.

Once they are determined to be illegally in the country, everything they earned in the US was illegally gained and therefore forfeited to the gov't. That should cover some of the costs.

Once convicted of the crime, we then sell them to the companies that need work done that no one else will do. Therefore, the slave labor will be legal, freeing employers from legal consequence.

The gov't gains money from the sale, the employers gain slave labor, there no need to deport as they employer is responsible for their property, and everyone is happy.

Plus, once the slave auctions begin, the illegal immigration problem will suddenly resolve itself as the illegal masses flee from our slaving country.

Oh, if their kids are citizens, they can stay with their enslaved parents.

What the US should do is put the burden of proving citizenship of job applicants back onto employers (as it was pre-Reagan).

If any employer doesn't make a "good faith" effort to verify an identity, the hirer should face steep prison time and the company should be excessively fined for the first infraction and shut down for the second. The same standard should apply to individuals who hire day laborers from a Home Depot parking lot. Once companies start getting shut down and people start loosing their houses for using illegal labor, things will start to change.

As long as their are so many jobs available, it doesn't matter how secure our border is; they'll keep coming.
