As the insurgency in Iraq escalated in the spring of 2004, American officials entrusted an Iraqi businessman with issuing weapons to Iraqi police cadets training to help quell the violence. That man turned the armory into his own private arms bazaar, selling AK-47 assault rifles, Glock pistols and heavy machine guns to anyone with cash in hand -- Iraqi militias, South African security guards and even American contractors.

This story is likely an example for how many billions of dollars of other unaccounted for US resources were disposed of.

Part of the Bush model of war is to be paralyzingly brain-dead. An energetic man, an interested man, and I daresay a patriotic man would have prevnted this and all the rest.

This takes us back to that very interesting question---What does George Bush do with his day?

In my opinion, he daydreams quite a lot, probably about how he's confounded Fate because of his success in life, but when upset over accusations of failure broods and promises to teach the rest of us a lesson.

He spends a lot of time expressing "I'm the President" to his employees, most especially the low level ones.

Hell a halfway decent man would not have invaded Iraq in the first damned place. smarts or not.

What does George Bush do with his day?

My guess is that serious introspection would not be at the top of his "Things To Do Today" list.

When I read this story I thought--Too bad those Sunni insurgents had to buy those Glocks on the black market---Had they waited a bit longer, Bush was handing them out to them for free.

Hey Doc

Bush can't even pronounce "introspection."

"Interspekshun"

I daresay a patriotic man would have prevnted this and all the rest.

Zed,

We get, it you hate Bush. Is it possible that you actually have something of any facts to post?

Buy the way genius, if they are buying Glocks on the black market it isn't coming from the military. I have only been retired for two years but the standard side arm was still the Baretta 92J.

See these are little thing called facts and details that you, and many others here, dont seem to think are important enough to look at.

By the way, this is an article from the New York Times, so I would take this as a severly slanted story to begin with.

"This was the craziest thing in the world," said John Tisdale, a retired Air Force master sergeant who managed an adjacent warehouse. "They were taking weapons away by the truckload."

I guess John reported it to Bush right after the first day he saw it going on but good old Bush just said 'aw, what the hell'.

Spud's understanding is that the black market in arms in Iraq has been going on almost since the occupation began. Reccently we had the story of a suicide by a high ranking officer over this clusterfuck.

The American military has repeatedly investigated the loss of these guns originally intended for Iraqi governmental forces (both military and police). The investigations, which many believe led to the suicide of Col. Theodore Westhusing, the highest ranking soldier to die in Iraq, and an ethics professor from West Point, reveal that massive corruption infests the Iraqi government. Worse, Westhusing found out the weapons distribution program, overseen by the State Department and handled by private contractors, was engaging in widespread fraud - including sending weapons to the black market for re-sale to insurgents, terrorists, assassins, and criminals not just in Iraq, but across the Middle East. Simply put, the weapons that are supposed to be used to bring law, order, and stability to Iraq are instead being used to destabilize the entire region:

In e-mails to his family, Westhusing seemed especially upset by one conclusion he had reached: that traditional military values such as duty, honor and country had been replaced by profit motives in Iraq, where the U.S. had come to rely heavily on contractors for jobs once done by the military.

The contractor of record in the Westhusing case, USIS from Virginia, owned until recently by The Carlyle Group, has just received a new 21 million dollar contract from the Department of Homeland Security. The Carlyle Group, of course, has ties to the George H. W. Bush. Some have speculated that Westhusing's involvement in investigating USIS fraud and corruption drew him into conflict with powerful forces that harassed him and drove him to his self-destruction.

Whatever the truth is concerning Westhusing, 80,000 Glock 19's are circulating in the Middle East and being used to wage jihad when they were supposed to make Iraq safer for both its citizens and our troops. And thus far, while possible explanations for such behavior have been offered, no one has been held responsible.

Tip o' the iceberg.

Iraq failures were, in many respects, not only of incompetence and greed but actually planned.

Anytime you have the civilians telling the military how to fight a war, you are doomed to failure.

Like I said back in the late 60s, either shit or get off the pot. If they want the military to clean up the mess they have to get the hell out of the way.

Naaaah. None of it was Bush's fault. He was always there, sleek as a greyhound, ready to leap into action, if he only knew.

So, we can't fault him for not doing anything, despite that being his job. Because he never knew, despite that also being his job.

Reminds me of a poem that starts: "I met a man who wasn't there..."

"Anytime you have the civilians telling the military how to fight a war, you are doomed to failure."

Iraq is a failure due to the incredible laziness/refusal to plan properly on the part of the Bushies and the constant expansion/redefinition the mission - Find and destroy WMDs/remove Saddam, then it was "figthting them over there", then it became Iraqi Democracy (which isn't a military objective, by the way). Any military leader who tried to interject focus and solid logistics was pushed aside.

With leadership like this, the military never had a chance. Of course Bush hacks are going to now try and blame the public at large for Bush's failures, but you're crazy to think such lunacy has any chance of gaining traction with those outside your delusional little circle.

Quite right I dislike George Bush, by the way. I wouldn't hire the man to cut my yard. I care about how my yard looks.

Reminds me of a poem that starts: "I met a man who wasn't there..."

Sapphire and Steel

Continuing the slightly macabre theme, Sapphire and Steel, a spooky sci-fi series shown in Britain in the late 1970s and early 1980s used nursery rhymes to chilling effect. A couple of the plots were heavily based on these nursery rhymes, making claims on their magical powers due to their antiquity and the nature of their themes. In Adventure Four - Sapphire and Steel never named individual episodes - there was one particular nursery rhyme that put the fear of the Almighty in to many children who stayed up to watch the programme, but who then had to walk upstairs alone in the dark to their bedrooms to hide beneath the sheets listening to the sound of their beating hearts.

As I was going up the stairs
I met a man who wasn't there
I met that man again today
I wish, I wish, he'd go away

HERO CHAVEZ WHILE HIS PEOPLE ARE SHOOTING AT PROTESTERS......

Absolutely. Far too many Americans died installing Chavez and far too many hundreds of billions of taxpayers' money have been invested in propping up his government while he wheels and deals with his friends next door in Iran.

Oh. wait, Chavez was just an attempt to spin away from yet another Bush failure in Iraq.

Certain individuals "in the know" profit immensely when they have a stake in the materials used in warfare.
This isn't news to anyone here.

Here's a quick read found on Lew Rockwell.com, for those of you who haven't seen it, take a look, and draw your own conclusions.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN..........

tonight on the nbc news there was a report about a book out whose author interviewed a george piro.........a arabic speaking fbi agent who spent hours every day with sadaam.....

and he says that sadaam told him that he make sure that everybody THOUGHT it had WMD because he was so afraid of iran.....

so what does this mean>

oKAY I will tell you.

it means that GEORGE BUSH DID NOT LIE TO YOU ABOUT WMD....

and since I know you hard core socialists wont but that.....look at it this way.

If I tell you that my penis is 12 inches long.....and then YOU go and tell pamela anderson about my 12 inch penis........and then when she comes over and tears my clothes off........and then sees that its a mere 10 inches..

WHO IS THE LIAR???

With leadership like this, the military never had a chance.

Just like LBJ and his whiz kids in the 60s. Is there a difference? We even have some amoungst us that are telling the big lies like Kerry did when he got back after fragging himself with some rice.

WHO IS THE LIAR???

George W Bush.

Deal with it.
He cherry-picked the info getting out (see the Downing Street memo et al). (See curveball)See also, the Atta meeting with Iraqis in Czechoslovakia as fake reason #2.
He refused to allow the UN inspectors to do their job, because they were showing no WMD.
Bush wanted this war, and no bit of reality was going to get in his way.

Let's face it, Bush doesn't want peace in the region for the same reason Putin doesn't.

The price of oil.

Conflict in the region has made Exxon-Mobil very wealthy and Putin needs oil prices high so he can make money to rearm Russia.

Just like LBJ and his whiz kids in the 60s. Is there a difference? We even have some amoungst us that are telling the big lies like Kerry did when he got back after fragging himself with some rice.

I see you're still seething over the fact that your boy Dumbya was too much of a coward to help fight the war in Vietnam.

I guess ya gotta go after kerry when your boy has nothing.

Good day.

My guess is that your whole analogy is about 6 inches overstated, in addition to being flawed.

Let me fix it for you:
Pam Anderson is my boss, and she tells me to go out and find her a guy with a 12" dick. I hear you shooting your mouth off at a bar about your 12" dick. I don't ask you to drop your pants, or talk to your old girlfriends. One of your drinking buddies swears it's true, he saw you pee once.

So I deliver you to Pam, and she discovers your shrivelled, flaccid, infantile genitalia. Now, you tell me: DID I DO MY FUCKING JOB?

No. And neither did Bush. That is, unless he intentially lied to us in order to take us to war for other reasons we wouldn't support.

So, which is it - Incompetent, or Corrupt?

Argh

That was practically poetic.

He refused to allow the UN inspectors to do their job, because they were showing no WMD.
Bush wanted this war, and no bit of reality was going to get in his way.

and all because of sadaam's actions.........again....as we have said all along.....just because you might have faulty information about anything doesnt mean that you are lieing when you pass it on.....

argh......even though your information was all wrong......as in shrievelled genitalia........at least someone has the snap to come up with something besides the same old shit....nice work.

but AGAIN.......your information is faulty about my penis......so when you say that shit......are you lying because you dont know the truth or are you lying on purpose and you KNOW about my penis....
( that may not have come out right, but you get the point.........ha ha)

Dubya lied out of His ass about Iraq and You know it too. Dubya lied to YOU BLT. Face reality for once. Dubya and the NeoCons wanted this war for OIL that is it. You were sold a bill of goods and You fell for it hook line and sinker too. I know it is disheartening but do come into the light of REALITY it will refresh You.

Larry Mohr

Is it just me, or does it seem like we're giving these weapons to both the Sunnis and The Shiites, and letting them fight amongst each other while we take their resources all sneaky like? As the worlds largest Arms industry, it seems like we're always selling weapons to groups of people to undermine their political agendas for one reason or another.

This war really seems like Gommer Pile of F Troop. I think everywhere you look, you see complete ineptitude among everyone. Is there a real policy to keep this war going for as long as possible so more money can be spend on the military? I don't know.

Dumb is dumb. If someone planned this, it couldn't have been done better. So how can the Genreals go on TV and ask the questions, I don't know where they are getting all the modern weapons? Go ahead and blame Iran, but nowbody has given more help to the enemy and weapons that the USA
