Norman Mailer, the macho prince of American letters who for decades reigned as the country's literary conscience and provocateur with such books as "The Naked and the Dead," died early Saturday. He was 84.

If for nothing else than "The Armies of the Night," some mighty engaging repartee, and raising the stylistic bar...thanks.

Mailer was a force of nature, at the same time engaging and infuriating. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Norman helped me prevent many sleepless nights...lol!

i'll never forget when he appeared on Hannity & Colmes a few years ago to talk about the iraq invasion. I've never seen Hannity so flustered and flabberghasted at Mailer's iraq argument that he was near speechless, a few times he was staring at the ceiling.... great watch if it's on youtube.

Norman Mailer is dead?

That fuggin' sucks!

He was larger than life but nobody is bigger than death.

"The Armies of the Night" will remain a classic piece o' journalism on down through the ages.

Spud was also a big fan of "The Executioner's Song"

Imperfect, maddening and at times downright ridiculous, he nonetheless managed to remain a fount of inspiration to many other writers with his stylin' ways with ink fer many a decade.

Spud will miss him.

RIP Norman Mailer.

Be Well.

If a person is not talented enough to be a novelist, not smart enough to be a lawyer, and his hands are too shaky to perform operations, he becomes a journalist

...or a blogger.

Be Well.

RIP Mister Mailer. On the up side you didn't go to soon... nor did you wear out your welcome.

a better breed of men when his mold was being cast.

Charlie Rose edited together a bunch of previous interviews with the man himself and put it on tonight as a kind of tribute show.

NAWOB.

Made Spud wanna read some of his lesser known stuff.

Spud appreciated Norman Mailer's take on the Iraq debacle as a "lose/lose" situation.

Sharp eyes still, at the end.

If there's a literary heaven Spud is pretty sure Norman is picking a fight with Ernest Hemmingway somewhere off in the aether.

That would be a good fight.

Be Well.
