An increasingly confrontational President Bush on Friday vetoed a bill authorizing hundreds of popular water projects even though lawmakers have enough votes to override him.

Bush objected to $9 billion in projects added during negotiations between the House and Senate. He hoped that his action, even though it is sure not to hold, would cast him as a friend to conservatives who demand a tighter rein on federal spending.

$9 Billion !!!
Bwa Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!
Isn't it funny how that used to be considered a lot of money???
He reminds me of Dr. Evil demanding $1 MILLION DOLLARS!!!! and everyone just laughs at him.

$9 Billion for the good of Americans!!!!sbr />
We can't have that - no no no no no!
All that money must go right over to Iraq to line the pockets of Bush's war profiteering cronies in no-bid, cost plus, phony reconstruction projects.

Who do those American people think they are, anyway?

Bush would veto his farts if they stunk bad enough.

But there is always enough money for rebuilding Iraq and constructing billion dollar embassies.

And enough money that over 10 billion dollars can just "disappear" in Iraq and there isn't even a real investigation.

Now I'm even agreeing with briwo.
The end is near.

Ah, investigating that missing money would take all the fun out of it being gone.

they say that there are enough votes to override the veto. He seems hell bent on hurting his own party

It's just plain selfish to take away from iraq. I get it George. We don't deserve anything as much as the Iraqis.

I agree AU. Iraq has sacrificed so much for America, there's really no amount of money that can repay them. Remember how Iraq saved our ass in WWII? Boy, that could have turned out bad.

So what if Americans face water shortages? Iraqis haven't had reliable clean water in 4 1/2 years! Time to get your priorities straight America! If Bush had known Americans woulf be so reluctant to pay hundreds of billions of dollars to rebuild Iraq's infrastructure, he would have bombed around it.

FHVM

The Senate should have been smart about it and sent the White House copy of the bill with "Water" scratched out and "Oil" written in is place.

I'm surprised bush didnt do that with a signing statement.

Bush is a scumbag. Where are his supporters in this thread?

Bush has been so outrageously reckless with spending that this is too little too late. Where was his veto pen when Congress was passing billions in earmarks?

A twenty year plan to help save the Everglades goes down because of Iraq. Logical, right?

Classic Liberal stupidity. Democrats are blindly loyal to their scumbags, from Ted Kennedy to Harry Reid. So they assume that Republicans and Conservatives are also blind little sheep.

Sorry, Dumbass, but it's possible to support a politician on some issues and not others. Just because you would jump off a cliff for Hillary! does not mean others are equally foolish.

Thanks for the help Bush we apreciate it.

-The Drought Stricken Southeast

Tao - Would you mind explaining to all of us that missed it exactly what this bill would have done for the "Drought Stricken Southeast".

BTW, I live in North Georgia. And our problem is lack of rain, not lack of infrastructure.

Redman

Live in NC and while lack of rain is the problem with a better infrastructure variations in rainfall would not be as much a problem. We have not expanded our water supply in years despite having double digit growth. Heck we would have been in a tight situation with only a one or two inch shortfall, a 15 inch shortfall in that situation is dire. Had we expanded our water supply over the past 10 years we could have had 2 times as much reserve as we did and 15 inch shortfall while bad would not have been the end of the world.

Granted it's not really a federal issue it's a local growth and planing issue, it's hard to see vetos at the federal level as a good thing when the grass is brown, the car is filthy, my long hot showers have been replaced with navy showers, and there is a brick in every toilet in town.

We're in the same place down here. Unfortunately, excess water continues to be released from our lakes because of questionable downstream needs. I think its time we start talking about building deslination plants on the coast so that we can maintain adequate reserves in places like North Georgia, Tennessee and western North Carolina.

Not a bad idea, fortunatly we don't have the problem of releasing it down stream here. We just have to deal with the crazy growth that we have had here for 15 years and not a thing done to upgrade ifrastructure.

Desalinization plants would be a big step in the right direction, however just a large or second resivor would make a differance especialy in crisis time.

Like I said before it's mostly a local planning issue, we haven't raised impact fees in 10 years and there does not seem to be any effort to keep people from building all the new neighborhoods they want. (which part of me is grateful for being in construction and all)

We have the same growth problems in this area. I think the rest of the country has realized that we have a better lifestyle down here and they want in. I know I grew up in the Northeast, have lived here for 28 years, and would never go back. A Yankee by birth, a Southerner by choice :-)

Were these water orpjects authorized by the consitution?

Were these water orpjects authorized by the consitution?

Are you suggesting that George "it's a goddamn piece of paper" Bush made a decision for constitutional reasons?

An area like Southern CA is over populated and has no water plan-I understand that. So they waste a lot of water-fine.. Most of the cities are that way. So lets see, now they will run out of water and the President has no plan. Since 36 states are expected to be in the same state over the next few years because of global warning the President denies, the problem is probably too large for the President to concentrate on during his vacations. Looks like the people living in the South have one option-Move to the north until the water runs out there too. Southern CA when it comes will be way worse-2008 will be an amazing year. The guy who sold Mammoth Mountain Ski resort in CA is looking almost as good as when Netscape was sold to AOL. Or when AOL purchased Time Warner.

Are you sugesting that because the south only got 30 inches of rain this year it's the president's fault? Or even better yet it's my problem? Go pound some of that red clay up your ass and take care of your own water problem.

over ride 'em cowboy

It's not Dubya's fault at all that they haven't gotten rain, but it is OUR problem, because the south is part of the USA (and I live in Maryland, not Georgia). Where's you patriotism? What about "E Pluribus Unum"? It's one fucking country, we can't just say "screw you" every time someone has a problem that doesn't directly affect us.

Vernon, you're a fucking moron and deserve every nasty bit of criticism that gets hurled at you in this place. Yes, I despise W and everything he stands for. But, YOU are the one who is so blinded by partisanship that you can see no other possibility than to assume that my anti-Bush statement automatically labels me a Democrat and "Liberal". I'm neither. Anyone who actually cares about the fate of the USA could NEVER support either W OR Hillary!

And on this particular issue, I repeat, W is a scumbag. Where are his (intelligent, cogent) supporters? Nowhere to be seen. You and Sniper sure as hell don't count. And if you disagree with him on this, please tell us that and tell us why. It may lend you a rare air of credibility.

Go pound some of that red clay up your ass and take care of your own water problem.

spoken like a true Bush supporter!

It's obvious we're well past the point of wondering just what the hell Washington is doing when the "authorize hundreds of popular water projects". It wasn't that long ago that states and cities dealt with stuff like that.

Ah well. So who am I supposed to call when my ditches overflow? Somebody in the county office? Or is there some number I'm supposed to call in DC?

RiR

In case you didn't read the article (have to presume that's the case) you missed the fact that this was Army Corp of Engineers funding to alleviate flooding along the Gulf Coast. Similar to funding he cut to shore up NO levees shortly after taking office.

Had nothing to do with your ditches.

Or even better yet it's my problem?

First civil war was fought over states rights, second could be over water, when us southerners show up with our guns, yeah we have more than you yankees, to take your water it damn well will be your problem.

Sniper don't be a dick, I know it's my local legislature that is responsible for the local problems and belive me they are being called into account for it. However when I hear that Bush is blocking water projects no matter who's fault it is initaly it's hard to get the warm fuzzys about him stoping needed improvments.

It's ironic that Sniper and Vernon's ridivulous "fuck you, fit it yourselves" comments come in response to southern water projects.

Slavery and states rights and seccession aside, one of the things the Civil War demonstrated was that a Federal system was inherintly superior to a loose confederation of fully independent states. While the Confederacy competed among themselves for resources and argued over strategy, the Union was able to organize and focus resources from Maine to California.

All of this to bring states like Georgia BACK into the Union. Now we hear buttheads like Sniper and Vernon telling them to just deal with water issues themselves and STFU. The whole point of having a Federal government is to bring national resources to bear on national, regional, or interstate problems. Watersheds don't follow political boundaries, they clearly qualify for Federal attention. Federal funds have been used to build most of the infrastructure in the country, which has benefitted everyone.

It's not lost on me that the south is largely responsible for electing Dubya in the first place, so it doesn't bother me a bit if they get to experience his fuckheadedness directly. Still, some problems need to be dealt with, so we should get on with it.
