When New York Gov. Eliot L. Spitzer (D) announced six weeks ago that illegal immigrants would be able to obtain driver's licenses in his state, he expected some opposition, but not a national firestorm.

im a lib but i do not support licenses for illegals
there has to be some rule of law--

i understand ER visits, but licenses are not such a neccesity IMO

If you give an Illegal a Drivers License You have in affect sanctioned Illegal Behavior.

Larry Mohr

Got to agree with you guys......it wouldn't surprise me to learn this is all a ploy to gain votes. Watch and learn.

Why not give pilots licenses to illegal immigrants.. oh wait..

pandering at its best

What is Spitzer's motive? It certainly is NOT to benefit the greater good and the security of the NY and American people, and to punish their illegal activity.

It's more likely that his motives are more political than anything and self serving for Spitzer. It will give illegals the oppportunity to commit voter fraud which Spitzer sees of benefit to himself and likely the Democratic Party. This act rewards illegal immigration. It also gives illegals the potential to lower wages and make inroads into truck driving, taxi operator and other driving jobs.

W T F...over

How about we lose the idea all together?

It might just not be a bad idea to also lose the moron that tried it.

Soon it will be another bad idea bites the dust..

Why would an illegal even go to the DMV for a real ID when they have fake ones.

And if they get a DL--then they are going to get motor votor sign ups.

Which is against the constitution--which Spitzer ignores that itty bitty problem--so what!

He should be recalled--kick his butt out of there.

millions of these illegal immigrants pay taxes and want to be intergrated into the system legally if given a chance. why do we call them undocumented workers when many have what is called a Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, issued by the IRS. THIS is documentation by our government... to over 6 million people over the last ten years.

They want to be integrated into the system legally? So the fact that they are illegals and have engaged in illegal activity is not a deterrent to granting them preference. Huh?

What about what we want? We want relief from the burden of schooling these people, paying for their medical care which overburdens our delivery system, paying for their criminal activity in terms of loss and from apprehension, detention, processing, and incarceration.

Why are you people who are complicit in the illegal alien integration program indifferent to preferences of Americans? Why should Americans defer to "the wants" of others?

Mr; Spitzer is a rich man's son born with a golden spoon in his mouth, who had his political advance greased because of nepotism. Now he is no longer bullying people around from the Ivory Tower that is the state Attorney General's office, but is on the hustings, and his actions are being examined and criticized.

He's a poppa's boy, who now having attained high office because of connections cannot envision anyone opposing his whims.

Mr. Gingrich supports an amendment to a bill pending in the U.S. Senate that would bar states from providing such validation of their existence to illegals in this country.

Deport them. Better yet, jail the employers who hire them and provide them with sustenance. If we need a guest worker program, why do the workers need to be Mexicans. They are making too many political demands and demonstrating just how they can work the system. Out with the vile spots. Import Asians for agricultural field work in gangs for a couple of years at a time.

And, very important, do away with jus soli, the rule of the soil whereby children born in the United States authomatically acquire U.S. citizenship regardless of the status of their parents. No more anchor babies.

No more anchor babies.

Posted by Johnson at 2007-11-02 01:21 AM

Amen, brother Johnson. I believe there is a US Congressman (Culbertson, I think) who is working to eliminate the "anchor baby" provision. I hope he is successful. I've heard, and I'm not sure how true it is, that pregnant women in Mexico make a mad dash to cross our border when their labor pains begin. Removing the "anchor baby" provision will eliminate this occurence, or at least prevent the baby from automatically becoming a US citizen despite its parents' illegal status. We definitely need to become more diligent about enforcing our border security and put a stranglehold on illegal immigration.

And issuing drivers licenses for illegals is definitely a step in the wrong direction. We cannot and must not reward any of our priveledges to those who broke the law to come to the United States. The fact that Hillary Clinton could not make this simple statement in the last debate proves that she is not interested in enforcing our border security.

WE already have the laws necessary to control illegal immigration, we just don't have an Executive branch willing to enforce them. This is nothing but a big game the corporations and the wealthy play with the working class pretending that only draconian actions taken against poor immigrants will solve the problem. They know it isn't true but think we are so dumb we will just fight among ourselves about how to deal with the problem and never remember to insist that they stop preventing the enforcement of the law.
Oh, they have made a few arrests to make it appear they are going to enforce the law but it is just for show.
Americans prove, once again, they are just too stupid to just use common sense.

HELLO! If he couldn't have predicted how the nation would react then he must have had his head in the sand. Of course we are upset. You don't reward criminals. We need to deport all ILLEGAL aliens, heavily fine those who hire ILLEGALS, and return to the original intent of the 14th amendment and do away with anchor babies. We need to stop paying BILLIONS to educate and provide health care for people who don't belong here. The dems would love to see ILLEGALS get a license so they can vote. I don't think the people of this nation will let that happen.

Why don't we call them "undocumented workers"? LOL because they are ILLEGAL ALIENS. These ILLEGALS ALIENS cost us BILLIONS of dollars. If they want to be legal then they need to go back to their countries of origin and get in line to come here LEGALLY.

Motivation??? Motor Voter !

Immigration Crackdown Killing Mexican Economy
Mon, 10/29/2007 - 12:33 -- Webmaster
Increased border security and work enforcement have led to a huge decrease in the billions of dollars that illegal immigrants in the U.S. send to Mexico annually and immigration advocates say Mexicans are suffering because they can't pay medical bills or buy clothes.

The U.S.-dependent Mexican economy gets about $24 billion annually in remittances from migrants living and working in the U.S. illegally, but changes in immigration enforcement have reduced the cash flow and villages throughout Mexico are feeling the effect.
------------------------------ ----

Immigration advocates paint the picture of dirt poor victims in Mexican towns who can't afford basic medical care, food or even clothes for their children because the evil U.S. government is finally securing the southern border and demanding legal work documents.

A recent article in a major U.S. newspaper featured touching anecdotes of scared illegal immigrants intimidated by workplace raids and deportations indicative of a mounting anti-immigrant sentiment that has made it virtually impossible for Mexicans to reach the United States and land well-paying jobs.

Some are so afraid that they don't even dare to cross the border illegally to look for work while others have decided to voluntarily return to Mexico. One man admitted that he quit his job at a Dallas window screen factory after hearing rumors that he would have to produce a valid Social Security number.

Others say that laws were never so tough, that in the past there were no consequences for entering the U.S. illegally and those caught were simply returned south. Word has spread quickly that now they lock you up, according to several illegal border crossers who say they can't find work because no one wants to hire someday "without papers".

Enforce the laws and they deport themselves. We need a really big push to clean up ICE so workers can enter our country with temporary work visa to work legally. Then they can work toward citizenship.

and here is the real answer.......

we could give them any sorts of documents if they were TRUELY concerned with some of the concerns they tell us they are concerned with.....concerning illegals of course.........

so we know the real concerns of people like this governor....

its all about the votes.

and of course.....recoil reads like he is concerned about the plight of the illegals and thats not all bad......but then you look at the number of ERs gone under because of the strain.......and it was reported just yesterday here in houston that illegals cost the TAXPAYER.......an extra FIVE THOUSAND BUCKS to educate the illegal's children....and that is money that is payed out that DOESNT COME FROM TAX PAYING PARENTS......but from you and I.......who already pay our fair share.......

When New York Gov. Eliot L. Spitzer (D) announced six weeks ago that illegal immigrants would be able to obtain driver's licenses in his state, he expected some opposition, but not a national firestorm.

Talk about a clueless, moron.

With all the scandals plaguing his governorship anyway, hopefully this idiot will get impeached or recalled soon.

I've heard, and I'm not sure how true it is, that pregnant women in Mexico make a mad dash to cross our border when their labor pains begin.

YEAH!

But don't let that little "im not sure if it's true" tidbit stop you from propagating such nonsense!

What an idiot!

When was the last time you saw a nine month swollen pregnant woman "dash" to anything ------- fool!

However I must say that I agree that we should throw out of the country every man woman and child that was born here in America from immigrants who came thru (uninvited I add) Ellis Island going all the way back to 1900!

an extra FIVE THOUSAND BUCKS to educate the illegal's children....and that is money that is payed out that DOESNT COME FROM TAX PAYING PARENTS......but from you and I.......who already pay our fair share

YEAH!

Typical rhetoric from morons!

Instead of bringing the underground economy above board and identifying those illegal's and their employers (equates to fines and new taxable income for states) ------ let pretend we have the resources and wherewithal (war on illegal's like the war on drugs and the war on terror = ineffective feel good bullshit) to house (=$), feed (=$) process, (=$) and transport (=$) them back to wherever they came from!

Yup, the "fiscal conservatives" speak ----- but nothing comes out except dribble of how to throw away more money!

And given the option of educating people verses locking them up (not producing or contributing shit to the economy but rather just costing more tax dollars to keep productive people idle) I would rather spend MY tax dollars educating them and making them productive contributors to society!

But them again I'm no cult member and actually a sane fiscal conservative who would rather solve problems then make more!

Correction!

I should have said Who Would Rather Solve Problems then Make More Dept for our Children instead of "who would rather solve problems then make more"

Dept = Debt

YEAH!

RED...I've heard, and I'm not sure how true it is, that pregnant women in Mexico make a mad dash to cross our border when their labor pains begin.

YEAH!

I personally know this is true. Having worked with many Mexican people. I also know it is true her in NC....I have a relative working at the county health dept. I also know we are paying for the second and sometimes 3rd&4th birth of anchor babies.

"sane fiscal conservative "

Awwwwwww...ya left yerself wide open with thata one RED.

"I'm no cult member and actually a sane fiscal conservative..."

Debatable!

Stupid!!!???? I hope to shit! He's SO stupid that if stupid was a snowflake, he'd be a walking blizzard! A FAKE PLASTIC blizzard!

YEAH!

I think it is a stretch of the imagination to believe that very many Illegals will go to the DMV office and say..."Hi, I'm here illegal and breaking the law. Can I have one of them new licenses?"
I wish it would work. Here they are lining up and admitting their guilt. Hell, we could have them home in a few days.
I just don't believe they are that trusting.

I also know it is true her in NC

YEAH!

So they make a made dash when labor starts ----- from Mexico to NC!?

How fast can you dash 1,500 miles, nine months pregnant and in labor?

Shit ----- in the last month of pregnancy my wife could go 15 minutes from a toilet!!!

three things to redneck..

first of all.....the usual response to more of his jibberish.

go fuck yourslef

and then.......someone has to make up the money that was mentioned in the aritcle because it that money is not being paid by the people who are getting that education.......WE HAVE TO MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE......get it.......

and third......hey numbnuts.....the phrase make a mad dash for the border DOESNT MEAN SHE IS ACTUALLY RUNNING...........there is always room for one more in the pickup..

and lets add one more for free.

go fuck yourslef.....

I'm no cult member and actually a sane fiscal conservative..."

Debatable!

Really?

You don't hear me wanting throw money away on a "fence" that magically stops people.

You don't hear me wanting to legislate that a pill form of marijuana is somehow good and holy while one grown in your yard for free is bad resulting in millions of good Americans being jailed and billions of tax dollars being spent hassling responsible people who chose it over alcohol and prescription drugs!

You don't hear me legislating what a FREE people do with their penises and vaginas in the privacy of their own home AND spending tax dollars pontificating about it!

You don't hear me wanting to police the world at the expense of the hard working people of America.

You don't hear me spending time and money litigating what a family does in their time of bereavement!

You don't hear me buying hook, line and sinker every blurt that comes from the governing!

You don't hear me advocating tax dollars be given to "religious" organizations for their programs of discrimination, conversion and outright hate!

You don't hear me advocating the surrender of liberty for the sake of imaginary safety!

And you don't hear me saying buy, buy, buy and do nothing to produce what you yourself consume!

The only thing debatable here are your true motives in all this!

Totalitarian? Authoritarian? Theocracy? Which is it?

Perhaps you just don't know what real conservatism is! Perhaps your mind has been twisted by loud and obnoxious preachers and wide screen TVs to the point where you just don't know anymore!

YEAH!

"You don't hear me.........."

YEAH!
You're right, we don't hear ya' ever spouting anything but jibberish and FAKE PLASTIC rhetoric. We like it though...greatly amusing.

WE HAVE TO MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE......get it.......

YEAH!

I get it alright!

I get that to round up, house, feed and transport these people would cost a great deal more than "MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE" would ever cost!

But then again that reiterates my point!

Your no "Conservative" but simply one who is just angry and out to make fast and easy money off the back of taxpayers (again defying the conservative notion of hard work pays off in the end)!

See, the fiscal thing to do (minus the blind hate that obviously seethes from you) would be to bring the underground economy above ground!

Expose the employers (fines) and tax the workforce (cause they are in most part WORKING --- that's why they are here after all)!

But rather than create a better future thru education (costs money), you would rather advocate the impossible (roundup, house, feed and transport) and pretend that throwing money at a problem (something today's cult "conservative" is well known for) fixes anything when history and statistics show just costs more and more and more and more money into infinity (costs thousands times more with NO return)!

Just look at the billions spent on the "War on Drugs" as an example of the flawed, skewed and very un-conservative policy of continually throwing money away at prohibition and policies that create organized crime and underground (untaxed) income!

Maybe Spitzer: What is the differences between a US citizen?

Answer: They don't pay taxes, get free medical care in the US, don't need to have car insurance or need to follow our laws when they are here.

When they want to go home, they call up US border agents and they get free trips back to their country

You don't hear me wanting throw money away on a "fence" that magically stops people.

YEAH HEY RED
Those advocating expanded fencing already have a model they can look to: a fence the federal government built more than a decade ago along a 14-mile-stretch in San Diego, Calif., that borders Tijuana, Mexico.

Before the fence was built, all that separated that stretch of Mexico from California was a single strand of cable that demarcated the international border.

Back then, Border Patrol agent Jim Henry says he was overwhelmed by the stream of immigrants who crossed into the United States illegally just in that sector.

"It was an area that was out of control," Henry says. "There were over 100,000 aliens crossing through this area a year."

Today, Henry is assistant chief of the Border Patrol's San Diego sector. He says apprehensions here are down 95 percent, from 100,000 a year to 5,000 a year, largely because the single strand of cable marking the border was replaced by double -- and in some places, triple -- fencing.

YEAH!

There you go again! Quoting verbatim the G o v e r n m e n t take!

A very good exercise in the depth of your "conservatism" I must say!

But hey, what conservative ever said government IS the problem and not the solution!

You keep doing what you do best ------ jumping ever time the government says too and stay irrationally scared of what ever they tell you to be scared of!
Building a fence like the Berlin wall is money well spent in the end (like what you just quoted stopped illegals) and San Diego is free of illegal's now a day!

It was so fucking effective, that's why illegal immigration has grown!

Illegals never went to college so they aren't smart enough to go around the fence.

More Democrats wanting illegal immigrants to vote, basically pooping on our constitution. I'm sure they have Bush's support as well.

Hey NY, learn from us here in CA; do a Gray Davis on him!!

our border is broken. if you were at a stop light that was red...you waited and waited...the light does not change to green, you look around, no cars. still you wait...the light is broken.you look both ways and there's no cars... so you go anyway, illegally you cross this street.

if our unemployment rate of 5% or less currently is not a clear sign that we need the immigrant labor force...it is time to recollect and recognize.

Make all driver licenses alike in New York, on condition that it is for driving privileges only. Then issue another ID for Citizens and legal residents which can be used for all other purposes.

This will allow illegals to drive with insurance, but cannot use the license for any other purposes such as bank accounts, flight tickets, etc.

(extra burden for citizens, but the ID can be given to them free of charge or at a cheap cost, offset from the fee collected from illegals who apply for driving license.)

I agree that a fence is not the answer, it may make it more difficult for the Mexicans to cross the border but they will still find a way to get here. If they still have sufficiant incentive, they will come. The fence will slow them down but not stop em.

I think the long term answer is cutting off the incentive. If we remove the incentive by agressivly going after employers for hiring them and cut off all resources to them, healthcare, education, drivers license, housing, etc. I bet the majority go home on thier own. No deportation, just stop giving them jobs and santuary. I know managers that hire illegals all the time. When pressed on why they do it -- "Im not a document expert, they have an ID and a Social Sec Card."

How do we make sure someone is a legal American or here on a legit visa? Once this part is solved we can go after the Employers with a vengence.

""if our unemployment rate of 5% or less currently is not a clear sign that we need the immigrant labor force...it is time to recollect and recognize.""

If you can't recognize the fact that wages have remained stagnant for six years, that working class families have steadily been becoming poorer in part because of illegal immigrants flooding the labor market with cheap labor then you are just choosing not to recognize it.

""How do we make sure someone is a legal American or here on a legit visa? Once this part is solved we can go after the Employers with a vengence.""

1. If they can't speak English then they should have their green card handy.
2. National ID card. In an era when we are supposedly in a "war on terror" it seems pretty necessary anyway.
3. If a bar tender can be fined for selling drinks to underage people it seems to me it shouldn't be all that hard to figure out if someone is a legal resident or not.
4. Those who benefit the most from illegal immigration (employers) pretend that this is an insurmountable problem but then won't support anything to fix it...because they don't want it fixed.

The media hypes the plight of illegal Mexicans. See MSNBC's front page story:

Foreign-born maids toil in the shadows
For some, jobs lead to a better life; others are exploited and abused
Esperanza Sanchez, 43, is one of the lucky ones. She came to Houston from Monterrey, Mexico, 16 years ago and has worked in more than a dozen homes as a housekeeper. She now has two steady clients and can make up to $550 a week.

updated 2 hours, 36 minutes ago
HOUSTON - In the debate over immigration, they are virtually unheard, unseen: the hundreds of thousands of foreign-born women, many of them in the U.S. illegally, who toil in America's homes as nannies, cooks and housekeepers, changing diapers and scrubbing floors.

They are jobs of last resort for people whose other options are few.

The lucky ones earn decent wages, and build a promising future for their families.

Go home, illegals!!!!
