watch Obama's commercial, in which he is talking about Social Security's problem entirely in right-wing terms:

Bullshit. The upper incomers were entitled to get the tax dollars withheld out of everyone else's paychecks. Their birthright is that entitlement. Welfare for the rich.

CORKY: I'd have more respect for Obama if he'd face the Social Security issue head on and pledge to repay the money owed to the trust fund. A pledge like that would probably endear him to a whole segment of voters who worry about their future benefits. Unfortunately, I think he's too naive to tackle the problem in front of a crowd. He'd probably come across as one of Dr. Watson's test subjects.

I can expect to pay ~$500K in Social Security taxes over my working life for retirement and survivors benefits. For those taxes, I can expect to receive a rate of return under today's Social Security of 1%. If I get it at all.
What? That sucks! My local bank savings account has a better rate of return! However if I could opt out of Social Security and invest all of my Social Security taxes ($350 per month) into ANYTHING else (lets say Gov Treasury Bonds) getting a 3% return I would have earned a total of ~$1M when I retired. That would be a very conservative and crappy investment but I would come out ahead of Social Security.
Come on, Social Security is a joke and a scam. The gov takes our money as a very low interest loan that they may never pay back! Its not good for anyone. The gov. has no obligation to provide for MY retirement. It is MY responsibility alone!
BUT...If they MUST take my money every month at the very least it should NOT be spent. Put it into an honeset trust fund and let it earn simple interest.

Twin, Funny how it seems that John Edwards is the one coming out with the "big ideas" that I thought we might see from Obama. www.concordmonitor.com - Put it into an honeset trust fund and let it earn simple interest. Al's lock box.

So, your answer for Obama is to make sure Democrats do not get blamed for the problem. What about trying to FIX the problem? And leave blaming for some other time/place? Corky, I dont give a crap whom takes credit for the stinkin lockbox/trustfund. Such partisan crap is what keeps any progres from being made.

Social Security is a spending crisis and nothing more.

The language in this ad implies that Social Security's retirement payments are responsible for the shortfall, and does not say that the trust fund was taken to pay for Reagan and Bush's tax cuts. * * * * Actually, the trust fund was taken to pay for other spending. The author of this article must believe that all income ultimately belongs to the government, except the pittance they allow us to keep. Instead, it's the job of government to keep taxes low--for everyone--and spend no more than they take in. Why is that so difficult for the lefties to grasp? It's hard to imagine how I could possibly benefit by having someone else's taxes raised. Harder still if it's my taxes that are going up to pay for some pol's generosity to a campaign contributor.

"and spend no more than they take in. Why is that so difficult for the lefties to grasp?' That's a scream, considering the last 6 years of complete Republican control came with the largest deficits known to man since the dawn of time.

You're right. The Republicans deserved to lose. But given the choice between tax-and-spend, and borrow-and-spend, I'll take Door #2.
